October 18, 2019

October is breast cancer awareness month. The Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center in Janakpur, Nepal, organized the region’s first ever Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on October 18th, 2019.  Nearly 200 participants including the local Health Minister of Province 2 of Nepal, Mr. Nabal Kishor Sah, the Mayor of Janakpur, Mr. Lal Kishor Sah, surgical oncologist  Professor Y.P. Singh, and BTF President Dr.Binay Shah, participated in the walk.

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers among Nepali women, however, due to lack of awareness and access to care, most women are diagnosed at a very late stage with poor outcomes. The BTFCC aims to reduce mortalities and morbidities associated with breast cancer and many other cancers through early diagnosis, treatments, and supportive care.

Late August, 2019

Three Washington Nurses and several other volunteers from Seattle area recently traveled to the Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center (BTFCC) in Janakpur, Nepal in late August to volunteer and train the staff there.

Tina Hoxie, a nurse navigator at PeaceHealth United General Medical Center in Sedro Woolley, WA traveled to the Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center (BTFCC) in Janakpur, Nepal in late August along with Jacob Hoxie, Mason Bakke, and Nikki Hoestra of Anacortes, WA. Oncology nurses Leeann Nakken and Mary Rogers visited the Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center in mid-October and provided training to the staff.  In low income countries like Nepal, these kinds of continuous training and guidance from experienced providers from the United States and other parts of the world will significantly improve quality of care and  help patient outcomes.

April 11, 2019

Surgical services and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) started at the Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center. The BTFCC has full time surgeon, anesthesiologist, oncologist, MDGP physician, and a team of qualified medical officers, nursing staff, lab and other support staff to provide high quality care to our patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

December 27, 2018

Our physicians saw several patients this week including many cancer patients. Cancer patients from the region who are currently receiving treatment at cancer centers outside the province visited the center this week for follow up, and BTF president Dr. Binay Shah examined and advised those patients. One of our oncologists, Dr. Abish Adhikari, started his oncology clinic at BTFCC this week, and Dr. Birendra Yadav, another one of our oncologists, will start his oncology clinic on December 29. We also purchased an electrocariogram  (ECG) machine, and several other equipment this week.

In addition to the progresses made at the cancer center, the BTF co-founders traveled to Dharan, Nepal and signed a historic memorandum of understanding with the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal to provide mutual support to each other to develop cancer and palliative care services in the region. News coverage about this collaboration can be found here.

December 20, 2018

The BTFCC goes all-digital this week with the implementation of our own electronic health record BTFConnect for patient health record and reporting, as well as Ujeli, Growthzilla’s POS system, for patient scheduling, billing, and inventory management. BTFConnect helps improve patient care by aiding shared decision making & continuity of care through follow up, and minimizes errors related to missing or illegible reports and records. With the implementation of Ujeli, patients don’t have to queue up for hours for services; they can simply make an appointment by calling the cancer center and come at the time of their appointment.

We also started ultrasound services at BTFCC this week utilizing our two state-of-the-art ultrasound machines from Canada.
